Priyan grew up in Kent and was educated at the King’s School, Canterbury where he was a King’s Scholar. He studied medicine at Imperial College, London and completed his basic surgical training at Guy’s, St Thomas’s and King’s College Hospitals in London. He then joined the Bristol Orthopaedic Training Programme and completed his higher surgical training in hospitals in Bristol and the Severn Region.
Priyan has undertaken adult and paediatric complex spine fellowships in Bristol and in New Zealand, with Peter Robertson and colleagues at Auckland City Hospital and Starship Children’s Hospital. His comprehensive training has covered surgery in the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine in all age groups. He has learned the latest techniques in interbody fusion, navigation and minimally invasive surgery.
Priyan has a strong research interest and has a master’s degree in orthopaedic engineering and a research doctorate in spinal biomechanics and the optimisation of vertebral augmentation. He has been a recipient of a Royal College of Surgeons of England Research Fellowship and has won several awards including best research paper at the Australian Spine Society, the American Society for Spine Radiology and the Society for Back Pain Research. He is also on the editorial board of Bone & Joint 360, which is the leading review journal in orthopaedic surgery.
